Alberta Main Street is actively seeking community stakeholders (residents, business owners, property owners and those who just love Alberta Street) to serve on our committees. Join a committee

We are actively seeking community stakeholders to join our committees! If you are interested contributing your time and talents, please let us know. We ask committee volunteers to commit one year.
Shared Committee Expectations:

  • Read Main Street Committee Member Handbook & other materials
  • Learn the Main Street Approach
  • Recruit/orient new committee members (as needed)
  • Prepare in advance for meetings
  • Cooperatively draft annual work plan
  • Take responsibility for projects
  • Always represent Alberta Main Street positively to the public
  • Participate in an organizational culture of philanthropy

Alberta Main Street Committee Descriptions


Responsible for getting Alberta Street into tiptop physical shape, including physical improvements to buildings, businesses, and public spaces.
Accomplishments include:
• Awarded 13 small matching grants to community partners to further district improvements within the public right of way. Our $19,673 investment leveraged an additional $31,824 in private investment!
• Installed Portland’s first privately owned public EV charging station in the right-of-way.
• Suggested zone changes to be incorporated into the City of Portland’s comprehensive plan that guides future growth and development along NE Alberta Street.


Responsible for promoting Alberta Street as the place to live, shop, eat, and play for both residents and visitors. The promotion committee coordinates many community-building events in the district, including:
• Lit Up & Local: A Month of Merriment on Alberta Street to strengthen community involvement in the district and support local independent businesses.
• The Annual Earth Day clean up engaging 239 volunteers who spent over 700 hours removing 4,000 pounds of garbage and graffiti along Alberta Street.

Business Development

Responsible for analyzing current economic condition and identifying opportunities for market growth, strengthening existing businesses, recruiting new, and supporting the overall health of the district.
Accomplishments include:
• Completed a district scale market analysis including collecting data from over 70 business and property owners and over 550 residents and customers.
• Hosted bi-monthly small business seminars with 100% of attendees indicating that they found the seminar helpful and plan to utilize the content in their work.
• Tracked a net increase of 8 new small, locally owned businesses and 75.5 new jobs within the district and a 4.6% commercial vacancy rate on Alberta Street, below the Portland regional average of 7%.


Responsible for ensuring the equitable distribution of resources and benefits.
The Equity Committee was formed in July 2014. The committee is working on four priority areas including:

Organizational Leadership, Resource Distribution, Outreach & Inclusion, and Volunteer Recruitment.
Meets 7-8:30PM on the 3rd Monday of the month.
Meets 9:30-11AM on the 1st Wednesday of the month.
Meets 6:30-8PM on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.
Meets 7-8:30PM on the 3rd Thursday of the month.

Our Mission: Alberta Main Street advances efforts to develop Alberta Street as a vibrant, creative, equitable, and sustainable commercial district serving residents and visitors to our community.

About Us:

  • We believe that we can make an impact on the preservation of that which makes us unique.

Basic Board Member Requirements

Each Board member should have or provide one or more of the following:

  1. A demonstrated interest in our mission and goals.
  2. Specific experience in and/or knowledge of administration, finance, program development, advertising, public relations, district business activity, communications, design, or economic development.
  3. Representation of a public or private sector organization in, or active in the district.
  4. A significant time commitment of 8-10 hours per month.

Term: Board members terms are two years.

Board Member Responsibilities

Collectively, the Alberta Main Street Board assumes legal and philosophical responsibility for all activities of the program. The Board is solely responsible for establishing program policy, approving the annual program budget and determining the goals of the program. Members are expected to serve on one or more of these committees.

All Board Members have responsibility for governance, fundraising and being an ambassador of the program within the community.

Individually, Board Members:

  1. Support Board decisions, even when he or she may disagree personally with the majority decision.
  2. Understand the mission of Alberta Main Street and promote the goals and activities of the program to his or her own constituent groups and to the district as a whole.
  3. Attend and participate in monthly Board Meetings on the first Monday of every month @ 6:30 – 8:00 PM.
  4. Actively participate on Board work groups, specific activities or projects promoted by the Board, which may include: committees, fundraising, outreach and representation on behalf of the program at meetings and/or events.
  5. Attend the training programs and workshops held each year by Portland and National Main Street programs.
  6. Contribute knowledge, financial resources and labor to the Main Street program.
  7. Offer opinions honestly, without reservation and in a constructive way. Encourage staff and other Board members to express their opinions openly in Board meetings.
  8. Does not commit more time to the Main Street program than he or she can realistically contribute.
  9. Promote unity within the organization and seek to resolve internal conflicts.
  10. Encourage orderly, systematic and incremental implementations of our work plan, discouraging the Board from being distracted by secondary issues or projects not included in our annual work plan.
  11. Are loyal to the program and honors his or her commitment to it.


Alberta Main Street must look at the future of Alberta Street from a holistic perspective and it is critical that Board Members are able to actively and effectively represent one or more constituencies in our community.
